Active Development in Aid (ADA)

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Improving access to safe water, sanitation infrastructure, and hygiene practices to reduce vulnerability, prevent disease, and promote human dignity.

Essential Services, Healthier Communities

Safe Water Access, Sustainable Sanitation, Community-Led Hygiene Promotion

ADA’s WASH programming addresses the critical need for clean water, dignified sanitation, and improved hygiene in underserved and crisis-affected communities. Limited access to WASH services remains a driver of disease, malnutrition, and preventable mortality across Somalia. ADA works to close this gap through interventions that are technically sound, environmentally sustainable, and aligned with international humanitarian and development standards.

WASH projects are implemented through participatory approaches that prioritize community ownership and gender inclusion. ADA rehabilitates water infrastructure, constructs sanitation facilities, and conducts hygiene promotion campaigns to reduce public health risks. Strategic integration of WASH into nutrition, education, and health programming enhances program outcomes and builds resilience in fragile environments.

ADA ensures that all WASH interventions are context-specific, culturally appropriate, and climate-aware. Systems are designed for long-term functionality, including solar-powered boreholes, elevated storage tanks, and community-based management structures. Hygiene behavior change communication (BCC) and training of community health workers reinforce sustainability and support long-term improvements in public health outcomes.

Core Components of WASH Programming

Integrated Infrastructure, Community Systems, and Health Promotion

ADA’s WASH strategy comprises six programmatic focus areas that address immediate and long-term needs in water access, sanitation, and hygiene. These areas ensure delivery of safe services while strengthening local capacity to manage WASH infrastructure sustainably. Each component reflects ADA’s commitment to accountability, inclusion, and resilience in fragile settings.

Water Supply and Infrastructure

Constructing and rehabilitating boreholes, wells, and solar-powered water systems.

Sanitation Facilities Development

Building gender-sensitive latrines and solid waste management infrastructure.

Emergency WASH Interventions

Providing lifesaving water, sanitation, and hygiene in disaster and displacement contexts.

Hygiene Promotion Campaigns

Promoting handwashing, safe practices, and hygiene kits through local outreach.

School and Health Facility WASH

Improving water and sanitation in learning and health centers across key regions.

Community-Based WASH Systems

Training local committees to manage, operate, and sustain WASH infrastructure.
